Pe vremea cînd, în plin triumf a tot ceea ce îmi era potrivnic, căutam, scriind paginile ce urmează, temeiuri pentru o neclătinată credinţă, cîţiva omeni ne întîlneam uneori, fiindu-ne unii altora slabe sclipiri de faruri, spre a nu ne pierde în întunericul care apăsa lumea.

Printre noi, o făptură înzestrată cu uimitoare daruri ale minţii şi inimii, superioară tuturor prin fantezie, inteligenţă şi pasiune, a fericit îndelung spiritul meu, în luminoase clipe de contemplare şi bucurie.

Atît de mult iubea viaţa, încât arse tot timpul ca o flacără înaltă şi albă, chiar şi atunci când ştiù că, prin această neobişnuită risipă de sine, îşi grăbeşte sfîrşitul.

Adeseori, mi-o închipuisem cu părul alb, într-o bătrîneţe liniştită şi surîzătoare, rămînînd, fiinţelor noastre în amurg, acelaşi prilej unic de profundă comuniune. Dar, în ziua în care împlinea treizeci de ani, dispăru.

Mitul se revelează mai greu unui tînăr care moare de foame. Trebuie ca acest tînăr să se numească Strindberg, Papini, Leon Bloy sau Otto Braun, ca să străbată cu ochii dincolo de mizerie, dincolo de foame şi de boală — şi să afle realitatea mitului şi a spiritului. Cum asemenea oameni sînt, din nefericire pentru noi, foarte rari — majoritatea tinerilor sînt apăsaţi de criză, sînt schimbaţi sufleteşte de mizerie şi de lupta pentru viaţă, şi-şi apără mai întîi tinereţea biologică şi psihologică, ignorînd cu desăvîrşire cealaltă ..tinereţe fără de bătrîneţe…

“In the Mahabharata, a learned friend tells me, a young champion armed for the combat and about to rush forward between the two armies drawn up in battle array, stops for a moment to receive a word of counsel from his spiritual adviser and that word occupies the next eighteen books of the epic ; after which the battle is allowed to proceed. These Indian poets had spiritual minds, they measured things by their importance to the spirit, not to the eye. They despised verisimilitude and aesthetic proportion ; they despised existence, the beauties of which they felt exquisitely nevertheless, and to which their imagination made such stupendous additions. I honour their courage in bidding the sun stand still, not that they might thoroughly vanquish an earthly enemy, but that they might wholly clarify their own soul. For this better purpose the sun need not stand still materially. For the spirit, time is an elastic thing. Fancy is quick and brings the widest vistas to a focus in a single instant. After the longest interval of oblivion and death, it can light up the same image in all the greenness of youth ; and if cut short, as it were at Pompeii, in the midst of a word, it can, ages after, without feeling the break, add the last syllable. Imagination changes the scale of everything, and makes a thousand patterns of the woof of nature, without disturbing a single thread. Or rather since it is nature itself that imagines it turns to music what was only strain ; as if the universal vibration, suddenly ashamed of having been so long silent and useless, had burst into tears and laughter at its own folly, and in so doing had become wise.”

John Farmer sat at his door one September evening, after a hard
day's work, his mind still running on his labor more or less.
Having bathed, he sat down to re-create his intellectual man.  It
was a rather cool evening, and some of his neighbors were
apprehending a frost.  He had not attended to the train of his
thoughts long when he heard some one playing on a flute, and that
sound harmonized with his mood.  Still he thought of his work; but
the burden of his thought was, that though this kept running in his
head, and he found himself planning and contriving it against his
will, yet it concerned him very little.  It was no more than the
scurf of his skin, which was constantly shuffled off.  But the notes
of the flute came home to his ears out of a different sphere from
that he worked in, and suggested work for certain faculties which
slumbered in him.  They gently did away with the street, and the
village, and the state in which he lived.  A voice said to him --
Why do you stay here and live this mean moiling life, when a
glorious existence is possible for you?  Those same stars twinkle 
over other fields than these

The literature of religious experience abounds in references to the pains and terrors overwhelming those who have come, too suddenly, face to face with some manifestation of the mysterium tremendum. In theological language, this fear is due to the in-compatibility between man’s egotism and the divine purity, between man’s self-aggravated separateness and the infinity of God.
The numinous, the awe-inspiring element of religious experience, according to Otto ,evades precise formulation in words. Like the beauty of a musical composition, it is non-rational and eludes complete conceptual analysis.
Mysterium can be experienced in feelings that convey the qualitative content of the numinous experience. This content presents itself under two aspects: (1) that of “daunting awfulness and majesty,” and (2) “as something uniquely attractive and fascinating.” From the former comes the sense of the uncanny, of divine wrath and judgment; from the latter, the reassuring and heightening experiences of grace and divine love.
